Situé au Nord-Est du Burundi, à 238 km de Bujumbura et à 39 km de Muyinga, le Parc National de la Ruvubu est sans doute l’un des joyaux les plus remarquables du patrimoine naturel burundais. Lors de notre récente visite, le guide touristique rencontré sur place a rappelé à l’équipe de Visa Travel and Tours que ce parc s’étend sur 50.800 hectares, couvrant quatre provinces :
- Cankuzo : 23.100 ha
- Ruyigi : 13.100 ha
- Muyinga : 9.600 ha
- Karuzi : 5.000 ha
Il s’agit de la plus grande réserve naturelle du pays, un espace d’une richesse écologique exceptionnelle.
🌍 Un paysage impressionnant et diversifié
Dans son ouvrage Akeza Karigura : 100 raisons de visiter le Burundi, le Pasteur Léonidas Nihorimbere souligne que le parc occupe la vallée de la rivière Ruvubu sur 62 km de longueur, avec une largeur oscillant entre 5 et 13 km.
La composition du paysage est très variée :
- 75 % de savane,
- 15 % de formations boisées,
- 8 % de zones herbeuses.
Ce mélange harmonieux donne au parc un caractère unique et attrayant pour les amoureux de la nature.
🐾 Une faune riche et rare
Le Parc National de la Ruvubu abrite :
- 4 grandes catégories de mammifères appartenant à 18 familles, dont les Bovidae et les Veverridae ;
- 425 espèces d’oiseaux, y compris de nombreux oiseaux migrateurs ;
- Plusieurs espèces de reptiles et de crocodiles ;
- 14 espèces de poissons.
Selon l’UNESCO, ce parc est le seul site du Burundi où l’on retrouve :
- le buffalo (cobe defassa),
- l’antilope rouanne,
- le cobe redunca,
- et le colobe rouge, une espèce emblématique de la région.
La savane de la Ruvubu présente d’ailleurs des similitudes saisissantes avec celles du Parc national de la Garamba (RDC) et du parc du littoral du Lac Victoria (Ouganda).
🏞️ Un site à haute valeur géologique
D’après la fiche indicative de l’UNESCO, les formations géologiques du parc sont dominées par des roches schisteuses, des bandes de quartzites, ainsi que des intrusions granitiques caractéristiques de la région.
Ces éléments confèrent au site une valeur scientifique exceptionnelle et constituent un attrait majeur pour les chercheurs, géologues et visiteurs passionnés.
🕰️ Une histoire de conservation bien établie
L’idée de protéger cette zone remonte à 1976, alors qu’elle était encore habitée et recouverte de brousses. Le parc a été officiellement créé en 1980, à travers le décret-loi N°1/6 du 3 mars 1980, suite à une recommandation du programme MAB (UNESCO).
Dans une interview accordée en 2021 à Burundi Eco, le directeur-adjoint du parc, Roger Niyonkuru, explique :
- En 1982 : délimitation officielle du parc ;
- De 1984 à 1989 : engagement du personnel chargé de sa protection.
Il souligne également la présence de plus de 400 espèces d’oiseaux, dont certains migrent d’Europe en période estivale, tels que les pélicans, marabouts et cigognes.
